Welcome to B is for Book coach! I’m B, a book development partner for non-fiction non-writers, and for the next few minutes, you are my author.
Don’t worry—that doesn’t commit you to anything more than what you’re doing right in this moment. Because the best authors are simply people who show up as themselves, for themselves and for their readers.
As our very first episode, I want to say I'm honored to create this space for and with everyone who feels drawn to the idea of writing a book and has a story or message that needs to be heard. Especially if you aren't interested in becoming a full-time author.
I think of us as “non-writers” who are writing anyway.
In each episode, I'll share encouragement, lessons, and insights drawn directly from my book coaching and editing calls, meant to help you discover the power of your story and decide how you want to harness it.
Today, we’re creating space for non-writers.
Not All Authors are Writers
I am always surprised when I say that “not all authors are writers” and it ruffles feathers.
When I say that not all authors are Writers™️, I don’t mean that you can skip the writing part. I mean that the book itself isn't really the point.
And no, it's not about letting AI do it for you or about outsourcing to a ghostwriter.
Because while someone else can put some words on the page, only you can show up with the unique perspective that you have earned over years in your expertise and your exploration and your experiences.
Showing up fully for a reader, with the audacity of an author, and the unique perspective you've formed over the years? That can’t be outsourced.
So when I say not all authors are writers or that I help non-writers write, I mean that writing as a job is not even half of what interests me (or my incredible authors) about books.
In fact, it kind of kills the vibe.
The Process, Not the Product
Here's what does matter:
Creating a book is the most thorough way to understand yourself and your message, and the most powerful way to connect deeply with an audience.
Even if you don't see yourself as good at writing, can't wrap your head around the bigness of a book, or feel intimidated by everything that comes with publishing, it doesn't take away from the power of creating a book.
It's the creative process that matters, not the final product that comes from it.
Forget whatever you've been told about industry gatekeepers or the status of being an author or the ROI that they're sure will change your life.
A book-as-a-status-symbol only works if you carry yourself with that same energy.
And some of us need time (and serious clarity) to grow into that space.
It's the process, not the product, that gets you there.
Having your name a book that you barely believe in, that skims the surface of what you actually believe in, won't cut it.
And I'm willing to bet that just hearing that sentence made you cringe.
That’s because you aren't here to play anyone else's games.
You're too busy rewriting the rules of your own.
Welcome, Non-Writer
If that's you…
If you're seeing the power that books seem to generate for their authors
If you're wondering if your message could ever plug into that kind of energy...
It’s because you want to be seen as an author. And not all authors are writers.
The work of authoring a book is so much bigger than what industry has confined the job of writing to be.
Here's what I told a friend last week, when she was grieving the illusions her child-self had about what the profession of writing might look like:
Maybe, since professions (meaning jobs) have become so wonky in this world, writing should be a profession in the other sense of the word. As in, a profession of love.
When you stop trying to perform the role of a writer and start showing up to your writing as you are, it's the kind of power that the hero realizes that they've had inside them all along.
And the second you think that maybe, possibly that power could be yours, too? I'm there. Something incredible is about to unfold. And I'll be damned if we let outdated industry standards and broken assumptions stop that process.
Not all authors are writers, and you don't have to be anything other than yourself to create a book that changes someone's life.
Even if that someone is you.
Thanks for creating this space with me today. Whether or not you’re ready to dive into writing quite yet, remember that the best authors show up fully, just as they are. That’s all it takes—and you're already doing it.
When more of your book is ready to emerge, the space we made today will be here waiting for you.
And so will I.
